Introduction

What a nice anime visual

I got another nice anime visual. xD

Majo no Tabitabi!!! This series that is translated into English as Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, started as a Japanese light novel series written by Shiraishi Jougi and illustrated by Azure. Since April 2016, it has been serialized by SB Creative under their GA Novel label. There are two adaptations. One of them is the manga that is illustrated by Nanao Itsuki and published on Square Enix's online manga magazine Manga UP! As for the second one, which is the anime adaptation, it is done by C2C and got premiered in October 2020 until December 2020. This intro is also a bit fresh. Oh, by the way, I rearranged the names of the creator on this section to be consistent with what usually do with anime characters with Japanese names: First Name before the Last Name (aka Family Name). Anyway, let's move on.

Plot

Loli Elaina!!!

Let's talk about the anime's plot. The story talks about a young teen girl who aspires to be like Niké, a witch who travelled around the world, becomes the youngest apprentice witch to pass the sorcery exam. Well, she had a hard time getting trained by any witch to become a full-fledged witch because she gets rejected everywhere she went.

Fran accepting Elaina as a student...

She found out about the "Stardust Witch," Fran from her parents' conversation. She went to meet her and out of her expectation, Fran accepts her. So...her journey to become a witch is all good and nice? Well, nope. She was given chores to do and not given any training. Yep, no training. What is worse is that after a month, Fran asked to duel against her, which she lost and finally broke down in tears.

Elaina broke down...

So...this whole fiasco with Fran is because her mother is worried about Elaina and wanted to teach Elaina something important. Anyway, with them reconciled, Elaina got the training she wanted and got herself the title, the "Ashen Witch", becoming a full-fledged witch.

Saying goodbye...

Time for an adventure!

With that, Elaina begins her exploration around the world, visiting and facing all kinds of people and places. And that's the end of episode 1. The rest of the anime is basically one short story after another, like the story of a certain princess who turned her own kingdom to avenge her lover's death. Well, there are a lot of short stories and some reunion stories of her own. Anyway, I won't talk about each and every one of them. I will only talk about notable ones that I think are worth talking about.

Saya and Elaina...

Saya crying in Elaina's arms...

I'm gonna start with the arc where Elaina met with a girl called Saya in the country of the witches. She failed the magic exam, feeling lonely after her sister left her and decided to steal Elaina's witch identification medal and help train to make her stay by her side. Well, the story ended a sweet ending as Saya decides to let her go and works even harder to pass the apprentice witch exam because Elaina finds out that she stole it and encouraged her to work harder to pass the exam. Sweet!

That flower girl...

...not a good ending...

...looks like a zombie apocalypse incoming.

One of the story arc, which is also one of the controversial ones is the flower arc where the country is probably overrun by zombies that are possessed by the flower field outside the capital and carrying bouquets of flowers. The flower field was "created" to attract tourist but...that flower is dangerous and only people knowing how to use magic can withstand it. BAD. Well, she didn't do anything about it or destroying the field, which is a really big controversy of the show.

Estelle and Elaina...

...wait until Estelle find out...it's what she thought it to be.

Another noteworthy story is the arc where Elaina accepts a job to follow a certain witch named Estelle to go back in time to save her childhood friend, Selena. Well...it did go well in terms of going back in time but...the aim...is not achieved, to put it lightly. They found out that Selena is actually the murderer of her own parents. Estelle thought that it was the death of her parents that begotten the tragedy of needing to kill her because she became a serial killer. BUT...behold, that's not the case as the real reason is that Selena's parents continued abuse has caused her to snap...mentally. It was a bloody scene. I dun want to further describe this incident as it is pretty bloody. LITERALLY.

Saya...calm down

Reuniting with Fran...

Meeting Saya again...unexpectedly...

AHEM!!! Putting that aside, there are quite a number of more chill story arcs, like the reunion with Fran and reunion with Saya TWICE. Of course, there are a lot of darker stories that she sees along the way. Since the story is structured such that Elaina is telling the stories that she sees throughout her adventures, there are dark, bright and interesting stories all together in one story, or more accurately, her diary. One more thing...it looks like the anime's ending hinted at the second season of it. Will there ever be one? Well, I dunno. Maybe? Anyway, let's move on.

A next season?

Anime Rating

Story (Rating: 10/10)

The story plot is structured and made pretty well although it is kind of like a diary of her journey, which contains different stories throughout her journey. The story flows and paces pretty nicely, in ways that we can understand and know. There are parts of stories that are being cut off but what can you expect from an adaptation? It is always gonna have parts cut off from the original during adaptation.

Moving on...

Art and Animation (Rating: 10/10)

The art and animation...Hmmm...they are pretty good. There are pretty moments, hilarious moments. ALL of them. They are well captured for us to enjoy. The fighting animations are pretty good. The animations are pretty consistent. The girls different characters in the anime are well-drawn too. xD

What a scene...O.O

Sound and Music (Rating: 7/10)

Beautiful opening song and ending song but sadly, I like energetic songs more. Oh, BGM? They are pretty good and well-placed. Oh yeah, the VAs did their jobs well. A thumbs-up to them.

Beautiful title screen...oh, where are we?

Characters (Rating: 9/10)

The character development part looks like it is mostly focused on Elaina because of the nature of the story. Did she develop? Well, at the start but after that, barely. Anyway, the real focus is actually on the side characters. Saya, Estelle and many more characters...they are the ones that drive the story, which is rare in any stories. Anyway, the characterization of each character in the series (including Elaina) is pretty clear cut and well-thought-out. Likeability of the characters? I'm too sure about. Elaina herself is pretty controversial itself. For me, the story is the one that stands out the most.

Oh no...

Enjoyment (Rating: 9/10)

Did I enjoy it? Yep, a pretty chill anime overall. Oh...I almost forgot...the darker scenes...I can still accept them. The serial murder is Selena arc...wow...I appreciate that they put a warning label but man, I didn't prepare for that bloodiness.

A more light-hearted scene...

Overall Rating: 9 (9)/10

Screenshots

That moment...some fight going on.

The wall...well, that's all I could say. xD

The special meeting...

LOL! That face when Elaina step on the grapes. xD

This madwoman...dun even get me started on her.

Elaina...I...know how you feel there.

Fran and Shelia...fighting alongside each other.

Saya and her younger sister, Mina.

Mina is very angry at Elaina...

Poor Elaina...she did nothing wrong. xD

Conclusion

Making new blog posts is getting harder and difficult as I'm feeling the weight of writing consistently. I do blogger for fun but it feels more and more like work nowadays. sigh...anyway, I think I should make my life a bit more colourful so that I can motivate myself to do this more often. Anyway...that's the end of this post. I hope that you enjoy reading and browsing this blog. Goodbye, and God bless you!

Well, let me end this with a special screenshot...when Elaina meets Elaina. xD
