The Ultimate Anime Review on a Cliche Mocking Magical School Story: Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

HELLO READERS!!! Hello, minna!!! I'm back and had written an anime review for the anime, Frame Arms Girl. I'm writing another one HERE!!! BUT this time, I'm bringing magic onto the table. It is NOT just ANY anime with magic BUT a cliche mocking, magical school anime.

That face though...

The anime is Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records!!!! Or maybe, you can go for the other pronunciation, which is Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Kinki Kyouden (I saw it on Facebook, which is absolutely wrong). Anyway, leaving that aside, it's quite a LONG title, right? Anyway, this anime just ended this week. So, yeah, let's GO!!!!

WARNING:-

SPOILER ALERT!!! If you haven't watched it and plan to watch it without anyone being the spoiler, please DON'T CONTINUE READING!!!

P.S. If you want to be spoiled, well, go ahead and read it. You HAD been warned.

Introduction

Poster of the anime...

This anime, Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records, or in Japanese, ロクでなし魔術講師と禁忌教典〈アカシックレコード〉 is an anime that is adapted from the light novel series of the same name, written by Tarō Hitsuji and illustrated by Kurone Mishima. Well, that is triangular-shaped bracket tell you that the Kanji, 禁忌教典 as is supposed to read as Akashic Record (in Japanese, アカシックレコード. Previously, I was contemplating which of the short form will be used. Will it be RokuAka? MajiReko? MajiKoushi? Blah, blah, blah. Well, I somewhat have gotten my way, in which I choose RokuAka since it represents the whole 'two parts' of the title. Yes, I claim that it's my invention. Hahaha!!! Anyway, leaving these things aside, let's move on.

An extract from the fan-translated manga.

There is also a manga adaptation of the same novel that was serialised in Kadokawa Shoten's shōnen manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Ace starting from March 26, 2015, and has been collected in two tankōbon volumes. Anyway, let's get on with the story and leaving technicalities aside (Finally!).

Plot

Storytime!!!

This story started with a child reading a storybook. Well, you will realise who is that later on as you watch the anime. Later, our MC, Glenn Radars was rushing to go somewhere and met two girls who are studying in a well-known magical academy, Sistine Fibel and Lumia Tingel. Sistine is a magic-user who is a noble and Lumia is Sistine's best friend and she has some power (in which you would know what is that). Well, they met with quite a funny scenario. Later, it was revealed that Sistine learns magic to solve the mystery of the enigmatic Sky Castle, which she promised her grandfather on his deathbed.

That scene with Glenn

Well, well, the replacement instructor, Glenn Radars, who is the MC of this story is replacing a missing magic instructor, Huey, who was taking charge of Sistine's class. Well, Glenn is rather lazy and incompetent as he is not interested in teaching magic. AND...he is taking charge of Sistine's class to her horror. Well, you watch that scene. It is quite funny. LOL!

Huh?! That...

After numerous encounters involving Rumia and Sistine, he found some motivation to teach and apologises to Sistine. When he found his motivation, he starts to teach the basics of all types of magic with a great success that rings across the academy. There are a few incidents that will involve Glenn, his old friends (namely RieL Rayford and Albert Frazer), old enemies (namely the Researcher of Divine Wisdom, his former colleague, Jatice Lowfan) and Rumia herself.

Taking down the bad guys...with the legendary Magical Punch

Every incident, Glenn is either dying, losing or getting into a troublesome situation, throughout his every struggles to save either the school, Rumia, Sistine, RieL or EVEN the Queen of the Alzano Empire (this one, he just happened to do so). They have a lot of cliffhanger in between episodes in this anime series.

What?! RieL...NO!!! Why do you betray us?!

Anime Ratings

Story (Rating: 10/10)

Cute girls...boys doing boys thing...crazy events...Well, the light-hearted moments are really funny. The back story is GOOD and sometimes REALLY sad. The build-up story to this anime is quite well done. This helps us to somewhat understand the context of the story. The fights are good, especially in the last episode. Sistine's slow growth in character really helps to build up to that last fight although the bad guy is defeated. Rumia's bravery and toughness really help Glenn to get out from his slump and hatred for magic. So things to talk about...a little time. I still want to start to play my piano again, learn Russian, broaden my Japanese vocabulary base...Anyway, let's move on.

OK...the bad guys are here...Leos and that mysterious guy...

Art and Animation (Rating: 8/10)

The art is quite decent and the animation of the fights are quite well done. Of course, I can't ignore the cute faces that Sistine makes when she is flustered and the many sweet faces of Rumia. They are well drawn by the animators.

Cute, right? Sistine is blushing...

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

Good and powerful opening theme song...cute ending song...what else? Both theme songs fit into the show well. Both of them present both the intense fighting side and the funny side of the anime. Well, the opening song is only presented starting from the ending of episode 3 and becomes the opening for the rest of the series.

That scene...from OP...it's really powerful in terms of showing the theme of this anime.

Characters (Rating: 10/10)

Cute girls...boys doing boys thing...crazy events...Well, the light-hearted moments are really funny. Why do I need to say this again? Because this is where you will see the tsundere Sistine in action, the somewhat all-understanding and really adorable Rumia and the stoic, almost robotic RieL and the ridiculously lazy and sometimes 'tsundere' Glenn, makes this show possesses these scenes. Anyway, my favourite character is Rumia, although Sistine is quite cute. I admit.

Glenn got his food from Rumia...

Enjoyment (Rating: 9/10)

The show is overall enjoyable, funny (till the point where I really, seriously LOLed) and exciting to watch at times. There is ONLY one thing that spoils the show's enjoyment factor is NOT ENOUGH Glenn X Rumia moments!!!! I DEMAND MORE OF IT!!! Well, that's it.

Sweet moments with Rumia...I hope there were more of it though.

OVERALL Rating: 9/10
