Introduction

Anime cover...

This anime, Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (りゅうおうのおしごと!) or in English, which is translated as The Ryuo's Work is Never Done! is adapted from Japanese light novel series by Project No.9, which aired between January 8 and March 26, 2018. The light novel was written by Shirow Shiratori, illustrated by Shirabi and published by SB Creative under their GA Bunko label.

Also, there is a manga adaptation with art by Kogetaokoge, which has been serialized in Square Enix's seinen manga magazine Young Gangan since 2015 and has been collected in four tankōbon volumes. With the brief details done for, I would rather move on with the plot, same for you, right? That's why people say the devil is the details, right? No? If no, then fine, let's on. Anyway, regardless of your thoughts, I would be moving on anyway.

Plot

Ryuuou title match

The story starts with a 16-year-old Kuzuryuu Yaichi journey to attaining the Ryuuou title, which is the best, greatest title as a professional Shougi player. During that journey, he was so worn out that he almost fainted until a little girl gave him water to drink. With that, he became refreshed and gain the title of  'Dragon King' (this is what Ryuuou is literally translated as). With the title, he lived happily ever after...

Yaichi's slump...

NO! Just kidding! He got into a HUGE slump after getting the title. Can't even win a single game after the title match until a little girl intruded into his apartment, wanting to be his disciple for shogi. OK, you might be asking, "What is shogi?" OK, shogi is basically a game of Japanese chess but I won't be going through the rules and tactics. Maybe next time I will talk about it but not now.

The little girl...

Alright, the little girl who barged into Yaichi's house is named Hinatsuru Ai, the same girl who gave him water to drink. She played with Yaichi and found out that she has great potential to be a professional shogi player. Later, after the incident between Ai, Yaichi and another girl, Sora Ginko, Ai became Yaichi's disciple all of a sudden. Well, that incident involves...well, something that gives you the vibes of hearing the police siren.

No, NOT the police!

All right, things did improve until her parents came and demanded that Ai return home. With that pretext, a strict demand is put in place, which is to win ALL three matches of qualification exam of shogi in the training group. She loss once and only is able to stay back with one condition, Yaichi is to marry her if she does not become a major player until graduating from middle school. With that, Yaichi becomes her master and have a serious challenge in hand.

The battle of the Ais...

And then, another girl came by. Her name is Yashajin Ai, which Yaichi as a boy, has witnessed her father's shogi match against the Meijin (another title in shogi). She was difficult to deal with until she lost to Yaichi and also, after her grandfather begging him to take her as his disciple. Even though she is still a little hard to deal with and not very honest with herself (tsundere!), she also has the talent to play as a professional shogi player. The rivalry started as Hinatsuru Ai battled Yashajin Ai in a shogi match during the training group session.

The fiery match...Yaichi vs Meiji

From there, the new shogi life for Yaichi began with the appearance of the two Ai. The good times didn't last too long as the title match for the Ryuuou title begins. Yaichi started to lose match-by-match and started to lose himself. He EVEN drives Sora Ginko and Hinatsuru Ai out from his apartment, who both cares for him very dearly. Cut the story short, Yaichi started to win and EVEN defended his Ryuuou title after the fiery match between Kiyotaki Kieka and Shakando Rina.

Yaichi broke down...

Well, from there, the anime ended and happily ever after? Of course, the story is still actually ongoing. Regardless of how the story ends, which could be a likely Ai getting the title and obviously being oblivious to the feelings of Hinatsuru Ai, Yashajin Ai (I suspect) and Sora Ginko, it could be very similar to the ending of Ro-Kyu-Bu.

A decent ending to the show...

Anime Rating

Story (Rating: 7/10)

The story...similar to Ro-Kyu-Bu and Tenshi no 3Ps, the loli fanservice would probably put quite a number of people off. For me, I'm more into the shogi matches since I had self-learned the hows and dos in shogi by myself and even got a physical board myself. The tension during the board game matches and character improvement in shogi is something that I give a lot of points for this section. That's it. The plot, flow and pacing of the story is just OK lah! As for the ease of understanding, well, you will need to know the basics to understand the pieces and do some research to have a reasonable understanding of the game flow of shogi.

Keika's important game...against the Eternal Queen

Art and Animation (Rating: 9/10)

Well, cute girls and cute clothes on Ginko Sora? A 10 out of 10! Just kidding! Anyway, the animation is pretty consistent and no awkward animation means it will a decent rating from me. The animation of the game itself is pretty decent. Well, I don't expect the animation to be something like Saki or even Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume (which I would do an anime review pretty soon) so it will be a pretty good rating.

Hinatsuru Ai takes on Yaichi to become his disciple

Sound and Music (Rating: 7/10)

Good background music as it fits well with the different incident and situations. As for the opening theme song, I like it! It's has a pretty good vibe to it and had listened to it multiple times. For the ending theme song, it pretty decent.

The opening theme song in the background...

Characters (Rating: 8/10)

Funny, I said! The interaction between character are pretty funny and sometimes...really makes you wonder, "What am I doing with my life?" Anyway, the character development is more into the game of shogi rather than towards their inner character. Favourite character? Yashajin Ai! Why? Because it is my preference! BTW, don't like the main character.

The drama between Hinatsuru Ai and Sora Ginko...

Enjoyment (Rating: 9/10)

I enjoy it! I admit...I watch it because of...LOLIS! Well, although the reason I watch is very much about a game that I had already known of, it is also because of lolis. Anyway, WHO DON'T LIKE CUTE GIRLS?!?!?!

The JS live show...

Overall Rating: 8 (7.75)/10
