Introduction
|
The anime... |
The anime Hanebado! (in Japanese, はねバド!) is adapted from the manga of the same name. It is also known as The Badminton Play of Ayano Hanesaki! or Hanebad! Anyway, the manga is done by Kōsuke Hamada and has been serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine "good! Afternoon" (in Japanese, good! アフタヌーン) since 2013. The manga has been collected in thirteen tankōbon volumes like most manga (which has been adapted into anime) that I have mentioned. As for the anime, it is done by Liden Films, which aired from July 2018 to October 2018. OK, the details of the anime done, time to move on to the plot.

Plot
|
That match that broke both of them... |
The story starts with the flashback of a match between two badminton players in their middle school days...Not gonna further elaborate on that. You catch it on the way. Anyway, the badminton club of Kitakomachi High School is having troubles getting members because of Aragaki Nagisa's madness. And yes, Nagisa is the losing party in that match and is going crazy about that match ever since. You might ask, "Wait, what about the winning side of that match?" Wait...be patient. I'm coming to it.
|
Nagisa is still broken after that match... |
Well, there is another important character that is essential to the story, Hanesaki Ayano. She is the winner but she gave up the opportunity to win the trophy because her mother left her to train another girl in Denmark, which I will mention later. And also, Ayano gave up on badminton after that fateful badminton match. And those two will once again meet at Kitakomachi High School and Ayano will once again play badminton after abandoning it years ago.
|
Ayano...being dragged by her best friend |
And well, a lot of people will be angry at Ayano's mother for abandoning her. Anyway, back to the story. Ayano was dragged by her best friend, Fujisawa Erena to the badminton club in Kitakomachi High School. After having a difficult time convincing Ayano to start playing badminton (and even involved Serigaya Kaoruko challenging Ayano out of the blue), Ayano decided to start playing again and also not being in the depressing and madness state.
|
Damn you! This person doesn't deserve to be Ayano's mother... |
And then, the badminton training camp happened. Long story short, Ayano and Izumi Riko lost to Conny Christensen and her partner in a mock badminton doubles match, and Ayano has gotten to know that Conny is the girl that her mother had trained after leaving her, sparks the madness once again. She slowly starts showing her mean side and resurfacing her madness back in her yesteryears. And that change is caught up by her best friend and her teammates. That madness continues until the final match between Ayano and Nagisa. Who wins? It doesn't matter, right? But, if you want to know the results, you better watch it yourself.
|
The final, and most intense match!!!! Ayano vs Nagisa once again!!! |
This anime is a good sports anime, with some tense, funny and light-hearted scene. But...one thing, the heavier and darker side of the anime might give uncomfortable vibes to some people like a certain YouTuber, No Shape. Anyway, for me, I quite like it until the point where I start reading the manga itself. If you wanna read the manga, you better be prepared because the anime's storyline has diverged from the original work (the manga), right from the early part of the story. Anyway, without further ado, time to move on.

A more pleasant part of the anime... |
Anime Rating
Story (Rating: 8/10)
Although I dun like the fact that the anime's story differs from the manga, the storyline in the anime is still quite well designed. The anime goes on a little more heavy tone while the manga goes into a slightly lighter tone. Overall, other than the slight difference in tone and the difference in story structure, the anime is quite a good watch. A good storyline, decent flow and a story that don't have too much crazy twist make it a decent watch.

Art and Animation (Rating: 8/10)
The animation shows quite a good amount of details on some of the small of the important matches of the badminton tournament. And also, the art of the anime is also pretty nice. The character's look, the consistency and the movement of the character are pretty good.

The match animation |
Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)
Good music, a good opening theme song that I like (quite A LOT) and a decent ending theme song are making wanna give a good rating here. Yes, I like the opening theme song a lot. It has that sporty feeling, makes me wanna play badminton, like...NOW!!!!!

From the opening theme song scene... |
Characters (Rating: 10/10)
The character development in this anime mainly focuses on Ayano and Aragaki because they are the main drivers of this anime. Well, the development of some side characters like Ebina Yuu, Isehara Sora and Hayama Yukiteru, gives it a little diversity in character development. Since it diverges from the original, some of those character development and light-hearted moments are kind of a filler to fill in the gap from the divergence in the storyline. Well, it doesn't matter to me. It's actually still quite good in spite of the divergence.

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)
I enjoyed it! It has been a while since I have last watched a sports anime, which is Takyuu Musume. And yes, I have heard of the butt-fight anime...Probably I would never watch it since it is a fanservice sport. Back to Hanebdao, the story's dark, tense and light-hearted moments are all good to me. I like them all! Life is like this, isn't it?

Aww...Ayano's cuter side... |
Overall Rating: 8.8 (8.5)/10
