A Tribute to KyoAni: An Afternoon Tea Time with the Girls from K-On

Hi, people, this is the post that I've promised. K-ON!!!!!!! Anyway, I will go back to settling my "old scores" after publishing this post. I dun really watch a lot of KyoAni stuff but I still feel sad for the staff and their families and am angry about this horrific act by the attackers.

A nice light-hearted scene...

Anyway, it's time to move on. We need to give our support to the KyoAni staff and their families. I can't really do much. May God heal their wounds and their wounded souls...

WARNING:-

SPOILER ALERT!!! If you haven't watched it and plan to watch it without anyone being the spoiler, please DON'T CONTINUE READING!!!

P.S. If you want to be spoiled, well, go ahead and read it. You HAD been warned. Don't blame me for being spoiled if you INSIST on continuing to read this post.

Introduction

Season 1...

OK, time for some introduction. The series, K-On! (けいおん! Keion!) is originally a Japanese four-panel comic strip seinen manga written and illustrated by Kakifly. It was serialized in Houbunsha's manga magazine Manga Time Kirara between the May 2007 and October 2010 issues. It was also serialized in Houbunsha's magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat. Interesting to know that this manga was relaunched from April 2011 to June 2012 with two separate storylines published in Manga Time Kirara and Manga Time Kirara Carat. There is also a spin-off manga about a different band of high school girls, K-On! Shuffle, which began serialization in July 2018.

More of them!

As for the anime, both seasons (and the movie and also the OVA) of the K-On anime are made by none other than Kyoto Animation (or in short, KyoAni), which is the reason why I decided to go with this anime. Anyway, season 1 of this series started airing on April 2009 up to Jun 2009, while its season 2 was aired between April and September 2010 (which is about a year after). As for the additional original video animation (OVA) episode, it was released on January 2010. As for the movie, it was an animated film based on the series was released in Japan on December 3, 2011. I hoped for a season 3 that never realised...sigh...anyway, the name of this series actually comes from the Japanese word keiongaku (軽音楽), which means popular music, just like the name Ro-Kyu-Bu literally means Basketball Club. Anyway, let's move on.

The movie...

Plot

That scene...LOL!

The story is about saving the light music club in Sakuragaoka High School starting by Tainaka Ritsu and Akiyama Mio being pulled in by Ritsu. The club was somehow saved by inviting another two members into the club, Hirasawa Yui and Kotobuki Tsumugi. At first, Yui has no experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music, but she eventually becomes an excellent guitar player. Anyway, the band is formed and is later named as After School Teatime. The members of the band consist of Akiyama Mio the bassist, Tainaka Ritsu the drummer, Kotobuki Tsumugi the keyboardist and Hirasawa Yui the singer and guitarist.

Their 1st concert live...

The whole story is about the band members spending their school days practising, performing, and hanging out together. It doesn't an oversight of a teacher until a crisis of the dissolution even when the club has four members. The club is overseen by music teacher Sawako Yamanaka who eventually becomes their homeroom teacher as well during their final year of high school. The club welcomes the club's second guitarist and first underclassman Nakano Azusa in their second year. After Azusa joins, they gain more structure and begin to practice more.

Practice time!

I could talk about the third year of this story but it is already not in the anime's territory so I would not talk about that. If you want to know a brief story about that year, you can refer to the summary of the story in Wikipedia. As for this post, I will focus on the first two years of this story. Anyway, the story is mostly light-hearted and funny although it is not as music-intensive as Aikatsu, Idolmaster and Love Live. I don't mind though. Light-hearted and slice of life anime is a good way to laugh and cheer up after a tiring day. Anyway, there is nothing more I could say regarding the story but it's just a bunch of girls enjoying playing together.

London!!!

Oh yeah, the movie! The movie is about the band going to London...yeah, that's it. There are a lot of funny things along the way. No worries. It's NOT gonna be boring. Anyway, looks like there is nothing more I can write here. Let's move on.

Moving on...

Anime Rating

Season 1

Story (Rating: 9/10)

The story is pretty bright and light-hearted. Not much of heavy stuff. The flow and pacing of the story are pretty good. The story is also pretty easy to understand. There is nothing much I could say. It feels like GochuUsa and Kiniro Mosaic.

The scene to finally recruit Yui...

Art and Animation (Rating: 8/10)

Decent and pretty good arts and animation. They are pretty consistent. I like the teacher rushing to the club room part. The animation of it is pretty intense. Oh! The characters are cute TOO! xD

LOL! That scene...super teacher!!!!

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

The songs are pretty decent. OP is cute. ED is good too. The insert songs are quite good. Nothing more I can say. There is a reason why this anime is quite popular.

The opening sequence is pretty cute.

Characters (Rating: 9/10)

Character development? Feels like GochuUsa and KinMoza...there is some character development like Yui learn to play the guitar and the improvement of the band but very much similar to GochuUsa and KinMoza. Also, there is the developing of bonds between members.

Azusa...CUTE!!!!

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)

I like this anime. It's cute, light-hearted and funny. YES! I will watch it again when I can. xD

Nyan...

They embody my feelings there...Azusa is so CUTE!!!!!!

Overall Rating: 8.8 (8.5)/10

Season 2

Story (Rating: 9/10)

The plot of the story is pretty much similar to the 1st season. The girls come together to play music and probably occasionally perform on stage. But, the story ended with a little bit bittersweet because of the band's nature. Anyway, the flow and pacing of the story are pretty good. The story is also pretty easy to understand.

Ui, with Azusa...all tanned...again

Art and Animation (Rating: 9/10)

Got some improvement...the art and animation look better than the previous season. Other than that, I dun have much to add on.

Cute lolis!!!!

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

More music-intensive...The music in this season is pretty good. If you like music, you would like this season better than the previous. Ummm...that's all I could say. I seriously should take a good listen to those songs. I do notice a few good ones that could suit my taste. xD

A nice opening sequence...

Characters (Rating: 10/10)

Same old cuteness...and more developing bonds between members. There is also more focus on Ui's (Yui's younger sister) bond with Azusa and another childhood friend of hers, Suzuka Jun. Anyway, it's pretty much very similar to the first season.

Cute scene...and a nice trio.

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)

I like this anime. It's cute, light-hearted and funny. YES! I will watch it again when I can. Period. xD

Yeah...sure...you are all sleeping...

Overall Rating: 9.2 (9)/10

Movie

Story (Rating: 9/10)

The story is still pretty light-hearted as it is mostly about why they decided to go to London and how their trip to London was like. The flow and pacing of the story are pretty good. The story is also really easy to understand, just like during the anime seasons.

That scene...

Art and Animation (Rating: 9/10)

The arts and animation are pretty good. They are still as consistent as they were in the previous seasons. To be honest, there is nothing much I can about it.

That scene...lol!

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

There are a few pretty good music there. I seriously should take a good listen to all of them. It has been a while since. There is plenty of music for this franchise.

Special music...

Characters (Rating: 9/10)

Character development? Not much...at this point, it mostly further strengthening the already very strong bonds between the band member and final farewell to Azusa and to us, the viewers. They are still pretty cute and funny. Relatability? Well, maybe in terms of friendship, it is more relatable to us.

Azusa...she is still cute.

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)

Good stuff. I enjoy it. Even though I have forgotten much of the K-On series, I really enjoy the anime when I was skimming through it to refresh my memories. I would like to have a rewatch of the series one day when I'm free.

That scene...definitely is being exposed.

Overall Rating: 9.2 (9)/10

Conclusion

When I was writing this post, it was pretty tough for me as I have forgotten most of the story and what makes me like this anime series. As I skimmed through the anime, episode by episode, I started to understand why this anime is so liked by many. I had even hoped for a third season, which never materialised. Anyway, that's the end of this post. I hope that you enjoy reading it. I hope to have you browsing this blog once again. Goodbye, and God bless you!

Sad to see it coming to an end.
