Quantum mechanics assemble! It's time for Buta Yarou movie!!!

Hi! So yeah...You know what I'm gonna talk about now. I went on a frenzy on research on the anime Princess Principal and decided to publish it twice: Once on reviewing the anime and another time on what I got while researching (and writing the review post).

CUTE!!!

Anyway, there is only one thing I wanna say: I could have written about this movie first before writing about Princess Principal but my fiery passion on Princess Principal cannot be stopped so I wrote a blog post for it TWICE!!! Damn, I have repeated this again. xD...OK, now, it's time for the movie that I'm gonna talk about now: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl! Yes, this is the Buta Yarou movie's name. Let's not waste time and go!!!

WARNING:-

SPOILER ALERT!!! If you haven't watched it and plan to watch it without anyone being the spoiler, please DON'T CONTINUE READING!!!

P.S. If you want to be spoiled, well, go ahead and read it. You HAD been warned. Don't blame me for being spoiled if you INSIST on continuing to read this post.

Introduction

The movie poster

This movie is a part of the Buta Yarou series, which I did mention it and briefly introduce it previously. I will talk a little more on the movie itself. The movie, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (in Japanese, 青春ブタ野郎はゆめみる少女の夢を見ない) is based on the sixth and seventh volumes of the light novel series. The film was originally released on June 15, 2019, in Japan, and received limited theatrical releases in other regions in late 2019. Sadly, that limited theatrical releases outside of Japan doesn't reach here. Sad. Anyway, looks like it has great sales. Oh, if I say any more, I will be writing a mini Wikipedia, which I rather not do so. OK, let's move on!

Found this picture. Nice, isn't it?

Plot

Kaede and Sakuta...BTW, this one is from season 1.

Remember this picture? It's kinda heartwarming to see...

The movie starts where the anime series ended previously where his sister's issue is resolved at the end, leaving the mystery of Makinohara Shoko's identity untouched. And yes, this movie is gonna be an all-out digging into the mysterious Shoko background and resolving Shoko's issue once and for all.

Oh, a loli there...

The story starts with a certain event in a primary school where the teacher asks the students to write out their ambitions. A certain loli little girl having a hard time to fill it up and that is Shoko. You would realise that this story is essential to the story in this movie.

Oh, no...this is the start of the catfight.

OK, let's get back to Fujisawa where Azusagawa Sakuta, a second-year high school student who greatly enjoys his days with Sakurajima Mai, his girlfriend for the past 6 months and his senior. Occasionally, the LOLI Shoko still come and visit the cat that Shoko wants to keeps but decided to keep it in Sakuta's place. Anyway, not too long after, the ADULT Shoko (you will understand why I must emphasise the word "adult") then appears when he is enjoying his time his Mai in his house. This incident sparks what we would call "shuraba" (修羅場), or in English, we call it the LOVE TRIANGLE...or so you thought it is gonna be the case.

Meeting loli Shoko in the hospital

Well, OK, OK, that catfight and love triangle fight between adult Shoko and Mai did go on for a moment of time until Sakuta discovers the LOLI cute girl Shoko in the hospital while he was bringing his sister, Kaede to access her mental health condition. The loli cute girl Shoko gives us a glimpse of her heart problem, which requires surgery. And later, adult Shoko explains the reason behind her split personality or should we say the Adolescence Syndrome of Shoko, which is related to her heart disease and her desire to continue to live.

Adult Shoko revealing the truth...and the future

The shocking truth of the adult Shoko is been revealed by adult Shoko herself as Sakuta and co is looking for answers to the appearance of ADULT Shoko. Shoko (adult) reveals that his scar is the result of her existence. What do I mean? It means Sakuta will die in an accident and becomes braindead and that scar on his chest is the result of that heart transplant. Wow...with that info, Sakuta went to that the site of the car accident that Shoko is talking about but instead, Mai sacrificed herself to do so to keep Sakuta alive, which deeply saddens Mai's mother and Toyohama Nodoka. Well, it's not that Sakuta wanted this result but it happens to be that way. So, with that, the person that donates the heart to Shoko becomes Mai, instead of Sakuta.

What a devastating moment...

Sakuta becomes lost and broken after the death of Mai. With that, the adult Shoko decided to help him to save Mai (and himself somehow) as he went outside. The adult Shoko told him a secret: he can also return to the past to rewrite history with her help but very possibly, at the expense of the disappearance of adult Shoko forever. He did successfully do so and damn, ALL of the quantum mechanic terms from the previous season resurface once again during this saga. Brace for it, people! And...prepare yourself!

Shoko...oh, Shoko....poor Shoko...

Anyway, with that achieved, they agree to find a way to help the young Shoko who by now is close to death since neither Sakuta's death or Mai's death could be accepted. Although they tried to help her, in the end, Shoko still cannot be saved without a suitable heart donor for her. The loli Shoko (the real Shoko) was visited by Sakuta (together with Mai) and reveals that she now knows everything that has happened. Well, it's because the two Shoko have "merged", I guess. Well, whether the adult Shoko has "disappeared" or "merged" with each other, we would probably NEVER know the answer as there's no official answer to that, leaving us to only can make guesses and speculation. BUT, I think that it's a merge, just like in Futaba Rio's case.

That scene...the FINAL quantum time travel...

Before Shoko passed away, she decides that she will create a future in which she never meets both Sakuta and Mai, thus saving them from the sadness of the situation. How is she able to do so? Well, magic, I guess? At this point, there's really not much logic to go by this phenomenon. With that, Shoko sacrificed her memory of meeting both Sakuta and Mai to have a happy ending for all of them. Well, that's the final use of Shoko's rewinding time and changing the future ability.

O.O...wow...what?

With that ability being used, Mai and Sakuta have never met Shoko but when Sakuta met Shoko on the beach, he felt that he knew her somehow even though it is the first meeting her. Well, it's because of her that the whole story is being reset for the happy ending of Shoko, Mai and Sakuta. Thanks to memory pieces crossing different timelines, they eventually recognize each other. Weird stuff...again, it's another science theory of the world having parallel timelines. The end.

That moment...

If there's a new season, will the mention of science terms be gone? Nope, I doubt that but maybe it will be lesser. I dunno much about the next part of this story but judging from the book cover after that, it's likely that it would emphasize more on a romance comedy side than the supernatural side that uses a certain science theory (and even crazy ones). Anyway, it's time to move on.

Nice to see Shoko again...

Anime Rating

Story (Rating: 8/10)

The movie, which depicts the arc regarding Shouko is weird because of the quantum mechanics involved in it and the ending of the movie. The movie's ending can be confusing if you didn't pay attention to the details of the movie. The story's plot is pretty good and has quite a depth. The story flows and paces well. It doesn't give the feeling that the story is too rushed and have missed something important. Oh, the easiness in understanding the story? Well, I've mentioned it already, isn't it?

Adult Shoko and Sakuta special date!

Art and Animation (Rating: 7/10)

Just like the previous season, the art and animation of the show are pretty decent, nothing much nitpick. The characters are well-drawn and consistent. The animations are pretty consistent and fit well with each other. You have done a good job, CloverWorks.

Adult Shoko and Sakuta quantum time travel time...

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

No new theme song but only reuse of the ending song for the anime. The song is good but it is a tradition to make a new theme song for your movie. Maybe it's just a way to save money as making a new song need money to make it happen. As for the soundtracks and the background music, it fits the atmosphere and theme of the story.

Mai and Sakuta...for Shoko...

Characters (Rating: 10/10)

The characters don't have much changes in the movie as most of the character development is done in the anime season previously. Well, there's a little for those who are directly involved in Shoko's case. As for the interactions between different characters, they are as good as ever though they are pretty much similar to the previous season, except for the brief love triangle fight between adult Shoko and Mai. As for relatability...have you got an experience where you can't do much for the person who you care for but is dying? Yeah, I understand because I had a relative passed away not too long ago. Well, not that I can do anything about it. sigh...OK, let's move on.

Rio...A rare sight of Rio, worrying for Sakuta.

Enjoyment (Rating: 8/10)

Decent watch and a lot of emotions running. I enjoyed watching it quite a bit. The crazy plot twist and madness involving concepts in quantum mechanics and something about the parallel world thing is pretty intense. Regardless of those, I still enjoy them.

Adult Shoko in a wedding dress.

Overall Rating: 8.2 (8.25)/10
