In recent times, when I was working on the Dearest Drop post and had my parents having issues with my figure collection, there was a really huge drama that surrounded the VTubing industry. I would rather not get into it because I'd rather NOT go through that drama. Plus, some too many people are already covering that story on YouTube so here, I'm gonna discuss the song that a certain VTuber named Maria Marionette has covered.
...HELL YEAH!!!! I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG! This song from Aikatsu!!! This song by Toudou Yurika!!! Vampire! Gothic! Dang! I love it!!! There is also a song called 永遠の灯 by Toudou Yurika. According to the Fandom site, that song is a response song to the song that we're gonna talk about here. I'm not sure about that but I love that song also. Cool song. Anyway, let's move on and talk about this song called Glass Doll here.

Glass Doll (In Japanese, 硝子ドール) is one of the songs that debuted in Datacardass Aikatsu! 3rd collection and Episode 19 of the anime. Yes, the song's copyright is with Bandai Namco and no one else's. Anyway, it was sung by Moe and Sunao (as background vocals) from STAR☆ANIS. In the anime, Sunao's background vocal also can be heard, however, it was uncredited. This song is also featured in the in-game cool-typed stage, Dark Palace Stage (in Japanese, ダークパレスステージ). Yes, Maria's cover of this song inspired me to make this post. So...let's move on.

The whole song is about being trapped in the "bird's cage" and the wish to be free from it. The song has a dark and gothic style, with lyrics that contrast the coldness of glass and the warmth of light shining into the singer's cage. Any relations to the anime? I would say that it suits Yurika's character of being a gothic fashion vampire idol and the two Yurika's arc spanning from Episode 19 to 20. Oh...let's talk about that episode that introduced us to this vampire idol of Aikatsu, Toudou Yurika.

One evening, as Ichigo was returning to her dorm as usual, she spotted a strange girl. She grows nervous while the girl talks about taking her blood, but suddenly she spots the charm Ichigo is wearing and runs off. She was confused and never talked about it to her friends until she was discussing the job she was having with her friends.

What job, you asked? It was about the new rock concert audition that is being sponsored by Loli Goth. That's when Toudou Yurika was formally introduced to us. She is introduced as an expected winner of the audition as she is playing the character of loli gothic vampire, which is well-suited for the audition. And of course, long story short, Yurika beats Ichigo in the audition because of her loli gothic vampire persona. Dang, it sounds quite chuuni, to be honest.

Before the audition begins, Ichigo and her friends get to know Yurika after a certain incident and some keen observation beforehand (wait, isn't that just stalking?). Ichigo did try to approach her through normal means but all attempts failed as Yurika shunned her. Only that incident truly brought them into Ichigo's circle.

One evening. as Ichigo was going for another run, she saw smoke billowing out of another dorm and found the startled Yurika tripping as she was escaping her room. She then helps Yurika to get her cherished parasol in the room. Fortunately, Naoto got the fire under control. Why the fire started, you ask? Well, it was because Yurika accidentally knocked down a candle she had been preparing for a ritual. After that, she invites the girls into her room for tea. Ichigo and her friends are surprised to see her room and how she looks with her hair let down, simple attire, and glasses. That's when she started to open up.

During that tea time, it is revealed that she is obsessed with vampires, especially sorrowful romance novels. She also loved European dolls and collected a bunch of them to play with and keep her company. As for her Loli Gothic vampire persona, it was born because of her feeling that she couldn't compete with others and her discovery of the brand Loli Gothic. From then on, she keeps at it because her fans love this persona and of course, herself too.

Oh, you were asking when the song "Glass Doll" is performed in the anime? The answer is during the rock concert audition by Loli Gothic where Yurika beats Ichigo. Well, the episode after this did have the same song as the insert song. That episode is about Yurika getting her premium dress from Loli Gothic for the rock concert despite an interesting "scandal" regarding her persona but that is a different story altogether. You wanna know about it? Let me keep it nice and short.

It talks about how she overcame her scandal and got her premium rare dress for the performance and shifts attention away from the scandal. What scandal? The scandal where she was out of her character twice. That is stupid, in my opinion. For Yurika, it is damaging to the image and persona that she built. Amid the scandal, Ichigo made Yurika realise that her fans were waiting for her return. That made her take the step to meet up with the designer of the Loli Gothic, Yumekouji Maya to get her premium rare dress. Well, Ichigo and her friends also followed her and supported her in getting into the room to meet the designer for Loli Gothic. Yeah, that's it. Let's move on.
