P.S. If you want to be spoiled, well, go ahead and read it. You HAD been warned. Don't blame me for being spoiled if you INSIST on continuing to read this post.

Introduction

The manga

Lucky Star (in Japanese: らき☆すた) started out as a Japanese four-panel comic strip manga series by Kagami Yoshimizu. It has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Comptiq magazine since December 2003. I heard there was an audio drama CD based on the series that was released in August 2005, and spawned four video games released between 2005 and 2009. Er...I didn't know that. Anyway, moving on...

The anime

The 24-episode anime adaptation is out and is produced by Kyoto Animation, which aired between April 8 and September 16, 2007. An original video animation (OVA) episode was released on September 26, 2008, accompanied by a drama CD. I'm not gonna talk in detail about the licensing and publishing right in North America and stuff like that because I dun care. It's not that important.

This is the spin-off anime

Anyway, there is a spin-off manga, named The Hungry Miyakawa Family (in Japanese, 宮河家の空腹). It began serialization in January 2008 in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp H magazine. The name that I gave, The Hungry Miyakawa Family is the result of my own translation of the name. It usually went with the name in Romaji, which is Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku. There is even an anime adaptation by Ordet and Encourage Films, which began airing on Ustream in April 2013.

Plot

The girls (from left): Hiiragi Tsukasa, Izumi Konata, Hiiragi Kagami, Takara Miyuki

The story of Lucky Star (in the anime) revolves around four girls in their second year of high school: Izumi Konata, Hiiragi Kagami, Hiiragi Tsukasa, and Takara Miyuki. Oh, I heard from Wikipedia that the manga started the story with the girls in their first year of high school. It is not that important. OK, I will explain to you in the next paragraph.

Random hairstyle swap between the sisters

Why is it not that important? Well, it has no ongoing plot and typically focuses on the daily lives of the characters. They usually do things that high school girls do and discuss things that are all over the place, usually including numerous references to popular past and present manga, anime, and the Tokusatsu series. There is nothing much to talk about as it is all over the place and has no consistent theme other than the character's behaviour and constantly interesting interactions with each other.

Anime Rating

Story (Rating: 7/10)

There is no proper plot or theme whatsoever in the series, but only humour and randomness to bring people to watch it again and again. They do it pretty well but it could end up as a poor story if the humour doesn't land right.

Art and Animation (Rating: 8/10)

The animation is pretty old-fashioned but this anime is from the early 2000s. Nothing much I could expect. The animation is pretty good, in my opinion. There is no need for really good art for an anime that focuses on humour, hilariousness, randomness and ridiculousness.

Why does it feel like Initial D right now?

Sound and Music (Rating: 7/10)

The opening theme song is great and as chaotic as the anime, which suits the anime really well. The background music...well, great for the anime in general. Oh? Are you asking for the ending theme song? Well, there isn't any. There is...at best, a random ending sequence, whether be it singing or random scenes, there is no consistency on that.

Characters (Rating: 10/10)

Although there is no character development whatsoever, the interaction between the characters is really funny and interesting at times. For example, the interaction between the lazy but very intelligent and athletic Izumi Konata and the ever-diligent Hiiragi Kagami is at times hilarious and funny. Each characters are unique and have a different dynamic with each other, which is great. I like it. Some new characters are added on the way but the focus is still on the four main characters.

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)

I enjoy watching it. The randomness of the anime and the hilarious scene in the anime are gold. Nothing more I can say.

That passionate shopkeeper...LOL!

Overall Rating: 8.4 (8)/10

Konata the fox?

Tsukasa the dog?

Yutaka the squirrel?

Now, Kagami the rabbit?!

Goodbye, and God bless you!
