Drama, Fighting and Reaching for the Stars. AH, so EXCITING!!!!

Hi, people! Welcome! I've been quite active in writing blog posts. I'm trying to clear my blog writing backlog as much as I can. Anyway, after talking about another "cute girls doing cute things" anime, it is time for another anime but it's not cute girls doing cute things anymore but a little more action.

The two people...

This post is about Revue Starlight!!!!! It is also known by its full name, Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight! It is gonna be full of actions and excitement!!!!!! Oh yeah, there is still the OVA. I have decided not to wait for it because it is mostly just an add-on story and mostly light-hearted. OK, that's it! let's GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WARNING:-

SPOILER ALERT!!! If you haven't watched it and plan to watch it without anyone being the spoiler, please DON'T CONTINUE READING!!!

P.S. If you want to be spoiled, well, go ahead and read it. You HAD been warned. Don't blame me for being spoiled if you INSIST on continuing to read this post.

Introduction

The anime!!!!!

The anime, which is commonly called Revue Starlight (full name:  Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight, Japanese: 少女☆歌劇 レヴュー・スタァライト) is a Japanese media franchise created in 2017 by Bushiroad and Nelke Planning. Well, this means that this anime is an original animation in itself. So far as I know, original anime-only stuff is not really popular unless it is a media franchise similar to the Love Live series and BanG Dream. Anyway, it is just what I observe. OK, back to the topic.

Manga...

This franchise consists of a musical theatre, manga series, the anime itself (of course, that's why this post exists) and a smartphone game. The musical theatre was performed in AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo between September 22 and 24, 2012. There are three manga adaption and are published in Monthly Bushiroad, a magazine owned by Bushiroad. As for the anime adaption, it is done by Kinema Citrus and was aired between July and September 2018. The smartphone game is developed by Ateam, which is titled Shōjo Kageki Revue Starlight - Re LIVE -. OK, with the introduction nailed, it's time to move on.

The game...

Plot

Aijou Karen!

And also her roommate, Tsuyuzaki Mahiru!

The story is set in the fictional Seisho Music Academy, the school in which our main character Aijou Karen is studying to be a Stage Girls (a direct translation of Butai Shoujo), or with a better translation, theatre actress. There is a short flashback of Karen's past when she is a child. This flashback will be very important for this story a little later on.

That reunion...with Kagura Hikari

All of a sudden, Karen's childhood friend, Kagura Hikari transferred into her school (and also into her class) from England. That reunion completely changes Karen's life. With that reunion, she found out (by tailing Hikari) the secret battle for glory in the underground Revue Starlight audition, which is orchestrated by a talking giraffe. Wait...A TALKING GIRAFFE?! Yes, you 'heard' me right, I 'said' a talking giraffe. BTW, an interesting facet of this anime. There is a picture of real giraffes at the end credit of each episode. Weird, right? I think so too.

The talking giraffe and Karen

A picture of a real giraffe at the end credit. Not joking here.

Anyway, in that audition, the contestants are pitted against each other to grab the title of TOP STAR. Yes, literally fighting each other with weapons to become the TOP STAR. What?! Yes, I was shocked too. This scene really captivated me to continue to watch this anime. The girls fighting each other to become the top star. It is a very unique anime indeed. OH YEAH!!!! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!!!!! Ahem, OK, back to the story.

The fight...

The fight that Karen witnessed was the fight between the class president, Hoshimi Junna and her childhood friend, Hikari. She was losing and suddenly Karen decided to jump unto the stage and help Hikari, which opened a whole new different world to her. She did successfully save Hikari and defeat Juuna BUT this angered Hikari and Juuna very much because of her interference to their fight. Hikari was angry to a point of being unable to accept Karen's entrance into the game. Unfortunately for Hikari, the giraffe accepted her entrance into the game and the audition proceeds on as usual.

A giraffe...accepted it.

And so, Karen starts her Revue Starlight audition with her opponent as Juuna. After a long fight and also a bunch of Junna's background story, Karen defeated Juuna and wins her first official fight in the audition. With that, Karen's audition starts with some complaints from Juuna AND also Hikari. Hikari is VERY angry with that and did try to stop her but instead was convinced by her. The fight in the story usually consists of some background of the character that Karen fights (except for a certain fight) and (mostly) victories.

Karen REBORN!!!

The story is so unique and exciting for me to watch, especially the ending. It is even crazier and more exciting because of the story twist, which is really quite unexpected. I enjoy the anime all the way. The fight, the action and EVEN the breaking of the fourth wall by the giraffe are the things that I enjoyed in this anime. To me, it feels like a little like an idol shows but unconventional. Just my opinion anyway. Anyway, let's move on.

Anime Rating

Story (Rating: 10/10)

The story where the main characters fight (literally) to be the top star is amazing in itself already. This kind of story reminds of the multiple idol anime that I have watched, especially the Aikatsu series (the original Aikatsu, Aikatsu Stars, Aikatsu Friends). Of course, this anime is not really an idol anime and it doesn't EVEN qualify as one. There are insert songs but they are usually played in the fighting scenes, not in a concert. Plus, the girls are not singers but are theatre actresses. The fighting scene is so exciting to watch. Oh yeah, as for the OVA, it's quite interesting to watch. Well, the OVA is not important to the whole story because they are like a slot in between after Karen's final battle against Hikari and the final scene.

What the?

Art and Animation (Rating: 8/10)

The art and animation are pretty good and yes, especially the fighting part. I love the action! Weapons clanging against others, the girls trying to find a way to defeat the opponents and intense fighting for the title of Top Star, ARE ALL SO GOOD!!!!!! The art and animation are consistent and well-drawn, no weird drawing and no weird animation. Great overall.

What on Earth is going on here?!

Sound and Music (Rating: 8/10)

The opening song is really good! So much energy! So fitting with the anime! The ending song is also good! The song is quite beautiful. One thing, the ending song is sung by different people in every episode (except for two episodes where the song is not played), similar to Seishun Buta Yarou anime.
The BGM is quite good and well-fitted in different situations.

From the opening theme song...

Characters (Rating: 9/10)

The character development is THE focal point of the anime, especially Karen. She transformed from a free-spirited actress into a hard-working actress after the reunion with her childhood friend, Hikari. Of course, since character development is the focus, there are character developments of the side and minor characters. The giraffe is a seriously odd character, I say. It probably signifies us, the audience to this anime. MIND BLOWN!!!! Oh yeah, and also the girls are quite cute. The whole story doesn't feel relatable to many of us, especially for the fighting part and the secret audition.

This is TENDO MAYA!!!!

Enjoyment (Rating: 10/10)

I really love the anime! I didn't want to watch it at first, but the action captured my attention and had influenced me to watch it. The action and story are really exciting! And also the plot twist in the end. It is so crazy!!!!! Might wanna re-watch it when I have the time.

Karen?! Karen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall Rating: 9 (8.75)/10
